Myths and tall tales about cosmetic dentistry abound. At Weston Spencer DDS – Conservative Comprehensive Dentistry in Rancho Santa Fe, we’d like to discuss some of those myths. Serving Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar, and La Jolla, we have heard almost all of them.
Myth #1: Cosmetic Dentistry is Never Necessary for a Healthy Smile
Many of the procedures that an aesthetic dentist would perform, including many cosmetic dental procedures, are not solely cosmetic. Dental procedures such as tooth replacement or dental implants prevent many potential problems such as tooth movement, bone loss and difficulty chewing and speaking.
Myth #2: A Dental Bridge is the Only Way to Replace a Missing Tooth
Dental bridges have been used for many years with success. However, dental implants are often a better choice for replacing one or more missing teeth. Dental implants have many critical advantages for patients. They feel like natural teeth, they are stronger, and they are easier to clean than dental bridges. Tooth implants can also be used to anchor dentures or partial dentures.
Myth #3: At-Home Kits are as Effective for Tooth Whitening Than a Professional Dental Solution
At Weston Spencer DDS – Conservative Comprehensive Dentistry, we offer our Rancho Santa Fe dental patients teeth whitening treatments that are commonly more effective than at-home kits. At-home kits may remove surface stains, but they do not provide optimum results and can often lead to uneven coloring. Dr. Spencer can take a custom approach to in-office teeth whitening at his San Diego practice, sometimes referred to as chairside bleaching, to help achieve the desired results.
Myth #4: Dental Bonding is the Best Way to Fix a Chipped Tooth.
Dental bonding can restore the shape of a tooth, but may not be the best long-term solution. If you have a damaged tooth, you may be a good candidate for porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers, also known as dental veneers, are thin layers of ceramic or resin used to cover the front surfaces of natural teeth. These wafer-thin shells are bonded to the front surfaces of teeth that are aesthetically damaged, allowing Dr. Weston Spencer to match the shape, color, length, size, and even texture of those teeth with extraordinary precision to the surrounding natural teeth to create a more uniform and cohesive appearance.
Myth #5: Metal Braces are the Only Way to Correct Crooked Teeth
Braces are often part of a transforming dental makeover for our Rancho Santa Fe teens and adults alike. We offer a variety of different options.
- Invisalign® is the clear alternative to traditional braces that has revolutionized orthodontics.
- As a certified Invisalign® provider, Dr. Weston Spencer is pleased to provide the AcceleDent Aura system to patients of his La Jolla and Rancho Santa Fe dental offices as a means of enhancing their orthodontic treatment.
- ClearCorrect Invisible Braces offer a straightforward way for you to get the straight teeth that you’ve been dreaming of.
