In this article from Weston Spencer DDS in La Jolla, we look at dental bridges and how they compare with dental implants
Dental bridges aren’t ideal
Dental bridges have been the go-to tooth replacement for many years, but they are not problem free.
Many people with bridges say they are difficult to keep clean. It’s hard to get toothbrush bristles or dental floss under the bridge. If you have limited mobility, it’s almost impossible.
Without proper cleaning, bacteria has no trouble moving in and taking over. When resulting decay reaches the roots of the surrounding teeth, the person is at risk of losing those teeth.
A dental implant is superior to a dental bridge
Dental implants are metal posts that are inserted into the jaw, where they fuse with the bone. One implant can support one replacement tooth, and several can support a dental bridge or even a full arch.
Implants are usually made of titanium, which fuses well with bone. Once it does it is a part of the body, and a solid foundation for replacement teeth.
Another plus: with a bridge, the teeth that support it have to be altered to support it. That isn’t necessary with an implant. Implants also have a success rate that is greater than ninety percent.
